Our meetings with freshmen and sophomores focus on helping students plan their high school coursework and extracurricular activities. We offer meaningful advice that ensures that they take full advantage of course offerings at their high school and frequently suggest ways to augment their curriculum outside of their school. We also help students to consider choices that will combine their academic interests and extracurricular pursuits which will broaden their experiences and make them stronger applicants to college. Academic Advisors also provides an overview of the steps involved in the admissions process so that families become aware of what to expect throughout high school. Our expertise enables students to build a strong resume of interesting commitments, to maximize tutorial services when necessary and to prepare effectively for standardized testing.
The junior year program includes a thorough description of the college admissions process. During these meetings, we include evaluations of a student’s academic record, extracurricular activities and testing strategies. Academic Advisors will discuss and assign research on a preliminary list of universities in order to determine a student’s personal preferences. The meetings will be focused on dialogue between the student and counselor that is aimed towards shedding light on various nuances about life at these schools. Students are encouraged to visit schools and are instructed on ways to maximize their time on various campuses. When possible, Academic Advisors will contact former students and connect perspective applicants with them in order to get an added perspective about the school. Subsequently, we help students to refine their list and ultimately prioritize their choices. The program is designed to help students and their parents navigate all aspects of the progression towards the ultimate goal of applying to schools.
First and foremost the senior year program begins with refining the final college list and formulating an overall strategy for submitting well executed applications in a timely fashion. Counselors discuss various Early Action, Early Decision and Regular admissions submissions. Once the student has finalized his or her choices, the essay process begins with a brainstorming session that prepares them to meet with a writing specialist. Multiple drafts ensue until a final product is approved by both the essay advisor and Ellen. We assist students in creating essays that will make an impact. Further suggestions are made about standardized testing to ensure that students have maximized their scores. Additionally, students discuss teacher recommendation packets, brag sheets, and appropriate ways to request teachers’ participation in writing on their behalf. Finally, when all offers of admission have been received Academic Advisors meets with students who require help in the decision-making process.
For those students interested in transferring from one college to another, Academic Advisors provides expert advice on assisting them in choosing the appropriate schools, writing a personal statement that reflects their current situation and coordinating all aspects of the application process.
Academic Advisors counsels students who are applying to schools with the help of their athletic prowess. In most cases, these students are being recruited by college coaches, but we also advise those students who wish to contact a coach who has not yet expressed an interest in him or her. Our staff will offer assistance with letters to coaches and appropriate follow-up once the letters are sent. We will incorporate the possibility of a student using his or her athletic abilities in the application process by choosing schools at the level best suited for them. We also will offer our usual services to these students, both with and without the option of utilizing athletics to gain acceptance. Email for more information.
